If there is a door at the bottom of the stairs, we recommend a manual or powered folding hinge be fitted, eliminating potential hazards.

Central Mobility will be happy to advise you which curved staircase is best for your requirements.

  1. If you have a turn in your staircase (See diagram B above), sometimes it is possible to fit a folding wooden platform called a Bridging Platform or Transfer Platform. This enables you to transfer from the stairlift to the landing, without needing a curved stairlift, saving you money. It is important to note that a Bridging Platform would not be suitable for people who suffer with dizziness or people who are unsteady o their feet. See fig 1 & 2.
  2. If there are only one or two steps leading off the staircase (see above), and if the landing is large enough, a false step or step infill can be fitted. Thus making it easier for the user to transfer from the lift to the top of the stairs.
  3. It is sometimes possible to install two stairlifts instead of one curved stairlift, if your stairs are like example F (above). This is a cheaper option, however, there will be twice the risk of breakdown and two warranties would be required, plus additional servicing. It may also require the user to transfer between the lifts, which may not always be possible.
Step Alterations

Why does the installation of curved stairlifts take so long?

From the initial survey, it can take up to 8 weeks before installation. This is because they are custom made, specifically for your staircase. Reconditioned curved stairlifts are quicker to install, taking only 1-2 weeks.

Are Curved Stairlifts reliable?

Yes, whether the units are new or reconditioned. Central Mobility deal only with approved suppliers/manufacturers.

Can You Rent Curved Stairlifts?

Unfortunately, you cannot rent curved stairlifts. This is because the rails are custom made.

Are Curved Stairlifts Expensive?

Because they are custom made, yes they are. However, prices have dropped considerably and you are now able to buy a reconditioned unit for around £3,500, compared with £5,000+ usually quoted by the manufacturers.
