What are the Stairlift fault codes used for?
The Acorn and Brooks straight stairlift displays a series of Stairlift fault codes. These fault codes are for diagnostic purposes. They help the user or stairlift engineer quickly identify the current status or potential problem.
This is especially useful when trying to explain over the phone to a Stairlift engineer exactly what has happened or gone wrong with the lift. Using these informative codes enables the Stairlift engineer to quickly diagnose the exact cause of the fault or issue. In many cases they can be used them to resolve the problem over the phone. This saves the user money by not having to pay for a callout.
How to use the Stairlift fault codes
The very first versions used a series of traffic light coloured led’s to display the fault codes. These were quite hit and miss, especially when the led’s became loose or desoldered from the circuit board in the arm. Also, when carrying out a Stairlift service, these are invaluable for determining whether individual safety circuits are working correctly or not. It eventually moved on to a digital display which showed various letters and numbers in single format as in the following table:
Acorn & Brooks Superglide 120
Appropriate to PCB model no. T498Display Code | Description | Possible Fault |
---|---|---|
BLANK | Power down | Check battery isolation switch is in the on position |
0 | Batteries (Low) | Batteries 17v or less |
1 | Normal | If there is a toggle fault, try a remote handset |
2 | No charge, audible bleep | Transformer unplugged, lift not on charge point, or power cut |
3 | OSG | Handwind stairlift clockwise to reset |
4 | Seat turned | Seat not in travel position, safety arm (if fitted) not down |
5 | Key off | Turn key on |
6 | Final limit | Overrun. Handwind stairlift up or down slightly |
7 | Footrest down | Lower safety edge activated |
8 | Footrest up | Upper safety edge activated |
9 | Carriage up | Upper safety cover activated |
A | Carriage down | Lower safety cover activated |
C | Batteries flat | Leave on charge for approx 1 hour |
E | Brake fault | Try reset. Possible low batteries. Leave on charge |
F | Motor | Try reset. Call engineer |
U | Relay fault | Carry out reset. Unplug charger from wall, turn off lift for 5 minutes |
The next generation of Acorn and Brooks stairlifts refined these fault codes by prefixing them with a letter such as ‘E’ for error. This enabled a greater list of stairlift fault codes to be used. These gave a more accurate display in real time of the stairlifts current status. The following table shows the list of Acorn and Brooks stairlift fault codes used on that particular model:

In 2016 all Acorn and Brooks stairlifts were fitted with a brand new board which used new software. This board now had auxiliary options built in to it instead of using daughter boards so basically a ‘one board fits all’ solution. The new board now also used a different charger and yet again, a more refined set of stairlift fault codes. The table below shows that list of Acorn and Brooks stairlift fault codes:
